Valley With a View
by Richard Youds
From showering at the base of a 40-m waterfall and relaxing in a lakeside cabin to lodging on the historic and hauntingly spectacular site of an old gold mine, the Deadman-Vidette Valley has that and more to offer. The valley is one of the southern Interior's least-known splendours that is easy accessed by road in all seasons.
At the north(west) end of Vidette Lake is a fine treat: the Vidette Gold Mine Resort, named not for its very reasonable tariffs, but for the 1930's hard-rock mine that once occupied and shaped the site. This lovely and comfortable year-round hideaway offers a range of accommodation form camping to chalet and even a "Hudson Bay" cottage reconstructed to modern standards from logs originally used in a late 1840's outpost. The scenery is marvellous, the fishing terrific, wildlife profuse, the atmosphere friendly yet quiet. Group and family rates apply since it is a great place for children too. Guests can decide whether they wish to partake of the fine dining available or to cook for themselves. Your gracious and knowledgeable hosts can tell you some of the interesting history of this area -- from the tragedies that occurred to early owners of the X-J (the Hoodoo Ranch) to the strange story of the Casa Grande.... Consider at least overnighting at this wonderful resort so that you can use it as a base from which to explore the many lakes and other features of the western edge of Bonaparte country.
